Located in the Scottish town of St Andrews, in Fife, one of this university's oldest traditions is Raisin Weekend. This is held each year over the last weekend of November and is the time when first-years are entertained by their academic 'parents' - with a tea party thrown by the 'mothers' and a pub tour hosted by the 'fathers'. It is little surprise that St Andrews has a real family atmosphere when it is considered that an unusually high number of the student population (about 50 per cent) live 'in Hall' in university residences. St Andrews is divided into four faculties: Arts, Divinity, Medicine and Science. It enjoys a particularly fine reputation for English, psychology and graduate philosophy. To become part of the university's 8,000 strong-population is tough, although it is attempting to widen its participation criteria. Heir to the British throne Prince William recently studied at St Andrews. |
