The University of Otago in Dunedin is New Zealand's oldest and second largest university. Its motto “Dare to be Wise” is imprinted forever on the memories of the students. More than 20,000 enrolled last year at this increasingly popular South Island institution. Student events are rife, particularly for freshmen, with a traditional Toga run taking place each year (provide your own sheets). Janet Frame, author of An Angel At My Table, whose artistic talent was famously mistaken for schizophrenia, is a former student of Otago. Otago is the only university in New Zealand to offer training in dentistry. Parties are popular with the students here and local pubs, bars and restaurants have come to embrace this, offering prizes and free drinks and all manner of student treats to first-year students in particular. |
