Also known as UNSW or colloquially as New South, this university's campus is divided between the upper campus and the lower campus, which are joined by an 'elevation rise'. Since being founded in 1949 it has developed a top tier reputation for teaching and research. Adopting the motto 'Knowledge By Hand and Mind', New South was set up in response to the strain placed on Australia during World War II when a lack of engineers was felt to have hindered their war effort. Such was its success that by 1958 it had evolved into an all-round generalist university. It now specializes in areas as diverse as nanotechnology, digital media, HIV/Aids research and social policy research. UNSW currently has approximately 40,000 students, 8,000 of whom study subjects such as taxation reform at the renowned Australian School of Business. The university is well-known for its involvement with primary and secondary education, administering several national and international academic competitions for school age children. |
