Founded in 1831, NYU has an enrollment of over 40,000 and consists of 16 schools, colleges and divisions located in six centers in and around Manhattan. Its main campus is situated in the Greenwich Village section of the city - the place where the Beat poets of the 50s such as Allen Ginsberg settled, attracting 60s singers such as Bob Dylan and later 70s artists like Lou Reed. But the university also has campuses a little further afield - with study abroad facilities in London, Paris, Prague, Shanghai and Tel Aviv.
Providing accommodation for 12,500 residents, NYU has a university housing system that dwarfs most other US institutions with many of its residence halls being converted apartment complexes or old hotels. NYU comprises 16 colleges, schools, and divisions including colleges of arts, science, social work, human development, business and arts. Hollywood stars John Cusack and Whoopi Goldberg both used to study at NYU.
