Previously called Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts and later Liverpool Polytechnic, Liverpool John Moores University was granted university status in 1992. With 24,000 students it is now the largest university (in terms of student population) in Liverpool and with the regeneration of the City of Liverpool the college has grown and benefited and is still in the process of expansion. A wide variety of graduate and undergraduate programs are available and LJMU is now widely regarded to be the top of its field in several areas, most notably in the teaching of physics and astronomy. Caroline Aherne, creator and writer of The Royle Family and Mrs Merton was a student here. |
