98% of the 34,000 students at Brigham Young University are Mormon. The university, in Utah in the United States, requires the students to adhere to a strict honour code in line with Mormon beliefs. The students are forbidden to have sex and must have conservative hairstyles and clothes (which perhaps makes the former easier). Questioning the religious doctrine of the university is actively discouraged and in 1992, the university drafted a new Statement on Academic Freedom specifying that limitations may be placed upon ‘expression with students or in public that contradicts or opposes, rather than analyzes or discusses, fundamental Church doctrine or policy'. 97% of male students take time out to become missionaries. |
